The Prophet ﷺ had a ring of gold made for himself, so the people also had rings of gold made. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "I had a ring of gold made for myself." He cast it aside and said, "I will never wear it again." So the people cast aside their rings as well.
اتخذ النبي ﷺ خاتما من ذهب، فاتخذ الناس خواتيم من ذهب، فقال النبي ﷺ: إني اتخذت خاتما من ذهب فنبذه وقال: إني لن ألبسه أبدا، فنبذ الناس خواتيمهم.
Bukhari related it in "Holding Fast" (7298) from Abu Naeem, who said, Sufyan narrated to us from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar, and he related it.Malik related it in "Description of the Prophet ﷺ" (39), and from his route Bukhari related it in "Clothing" (5867), from Abdullah bin Dinar with similar wording, in brief form. Bukhari also related it in "Oaths and Vows" (6651), and Muslim in "Clothing and Adornment" (2091), from the route of Nafi, from Ibn Umar, with the same meaning.
