The Prophet ﷺ passed by a group of people who were pollinating their date palms and said, "If you did not do this, it would still turn out fine."The crop came out as inferior, shriveled dates. He passed by them again and asked, "What is wrong with your palm trees?"They replied, "You said such and such."He said, "You know better about the affairs of your worldly life."Wazad added in the narration of Anas, "But if it concerns the affairs of your religion, then refer to me."
أن النبي ﷺ مر بقوم يلقحون، فقال: لو لم تفعلوا الصلح. قال: فخرج شيصا، فمر بهم، فقال: مالنخلكم؟ قالوا: قلت كذا وكذا، قال: أنتم أعلم بأمر دنياكم. وزاد في رواية أنس: فإذا كان من أمر دينكم فإلي.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Virtues (2363), by way of Aswad bin Amir, who said, Hammad bin Salama narrated to us, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha. And from Thabit, from Anas, and they both related it.Ahmad narrated it (12544) from Abdul-Samad, from Hammad, from Thabit, from Anas, who related something similar, adding, "But if it concerns a matter of your religion, then refer it to me."His saying, "yulaqqihun" comes from talqih, which means placing some of the male pollen into the female pollen. And his saying, "shisan" refers to inferior unripe dates that, when they dry out, become shriveled and worthless.
