The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and said, "Rejoice, rejoice! Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?"They replied, "Yes."He said, "This Quran is a rope. One end is in the hand of Allah, and the other end is in your hands. So hold fast to it, for you will never go astray nor perish after it, ever."
خرج علينا رسول الله ﷺ فقال: أبشروا، أبشروا، أليس تشهدون أن لا إله إلا الله، وأني رسول الله؟ قالوا: نعم، قال: فإن هذا القرآن سبب طرفه بيد الله، وطرفه بأيديكم، فتمسكوا به، فإنكم لن تضلوا، ولن تهلكوا بعده أبدا.
Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it in Musannaf (30628), and from his route Ibn Hibban (122) and Tabarani in Kabir (22/188), from the hadith of Abu Khalid Ahmar, from Abdul-Majid bin Jafar, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed, from Abu Shurayh Khuzai, who related it. Its chain is hasan because of Abu Khalid Ahmar, whose name is Sulayman bin Hayan, and he is hasan al-hadith. Munziri said in Targhib (59), "Tabarani narrated it in Kabir with a good chain."In these hadiths the Prophet ﷺ urged holding fast to the Book, without mentioning his sunnah, on the understanding that the Quran had already commanded them to obey him ﷺ, and in it is a good example. He ﷺ used to explain the words of his Lord through his sayings and actions, and the companions used to hasten to follow him in every small and great matter with complete openness and submission. So his urging them to hold fast to the Book encompasses holding fast to the sunnah by necessary implication, and this is why he sometimes made do with the Quran alone.The companions used to advise one another to take hold of the Book of Allah, as Anas bin Malik said, that he heard Umar, the day after the Muslims gave their pledge to Abu Bakr, when he stood on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and bore witness before Abu Bakr did, say, "Now then, Allah chose for His Messenger what was with Him over what is with you, and this Book by which Allah guided your Messenger, so hold fast to it and you will be guided, for it was only by it that Allah guided His Messenger."Bukhari narrated it in Itisam (7269) from Yahya bin Bukayr, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Aqeel, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Anas bin Malik informed me, and he related it.And it is established that Abu Barza said, "Allah has enriched you, or raised you up, through Islam and through Muhammad ﷺ."Bukhari narrated it in Itisam (7271) from Abdullah bin Sabbah, who said, Mutamir narrated to us, saying, I heard Awf, that Abu Minhal told him, that he heard Abu Barza say this and relate it.
