The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every endeavor has a period of zeal, and every period of zeal is followed by a slackening. If the one who slackens stays on the straight path and keeps close to it, then have hope for him. But if fingers are pointed at him in admiration, do not count him among the righteous."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: إن لكل شيء شرة، ولكل شرة فترة، فإن كان صاحبها سدد وقارب فأرجوه، وأشير إليه بالأصابع فلا تعدوه.
Tirmidhi (2453) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (349) and Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil (1242) graded it sahih, all of them via the route of Muhammad bin Ajlan, from Qaqa bin Hakeem, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ajlan, for his hadith is hasan. Tirmidhi said, "This hadith is hasan sahih gharib by this route." His statement "shirrah" means eagerness for a thing and energy toward it, while "fatrah" is its opposite. The meaning of the hadith is that the worker strives diligently in his deeds and exerts himself in them, then his resolve breaks down. Among such people, some return at the time of slackening to moderation in the matter and thus succeed, while others abandon worship altogether and thus perish. On this subject there is also a report from Habib bin Abu Fadala Makki, who said, when this masjid, the congregational masjid, was built, he said, and Imran bin Husayn was sitting there, and intercession was mentioned in his presence. A man from the group said, "O Abu Nujayd, you people relate to us hadiths for which we find no basis in the Quran." Imran bin Husayn grew angry and said to the man, "Have you read the Quran?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Did you find in it that the Maghrib prayer is three rakahs, the Isha prayer is four, the dawn prayer is two, the first prayer four, and Asr four?" He said, "No." He said, "Then from whom did you take this matter? Did you not take it from us, and we took it from the Messenger of Allah ? Did you find that on every forty dirhams there is one dirham due, and on so many sheep such and such, and on so many camels such and such? Did you find this in the Quran?" He said, "No." He said, "Then from whom did you take this? We took it from the Messenger of Allah
, and you took it from us." He said, "Did you find in the Quran, "and that they perform tawaf around the Ancient House" [Hajj 22:29]? Did you find in it, perform tawaf seven times and pray two rakahs behind the Station? Did you find this in the Quran? From whom did you take it? Did you not take it from us, and we took it from the Prophet of Allah
? Did you find in the Quran, 'there is no jalab, nor janab, nor shighar in Islam'?" He said, "No." He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah
say, 'There is no jalab, nor janab, nor shighar in Islam.' Have you heard Allah say concerning certain people in His Book, "What put you into Saqar" [Muddaththir 74:42], up until "so the intercession of intercessors does not benefit them" [Muddaththir 74:48]?" Habib said, "I heard him say 'the intercession.'"Abu Dawud (1561), Tabarani in Al-Kabir (18/219), and Marwazi in Taazim Qadr Salah (1081) narrated it, all of them from the hadith of Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari told me, Sarad bin Abu Manazil told us, he said, I heard Habib bin Abu Fadala Maliki, and he mentioned it. Abu Dawud's wording is abbreviated. In its chain is Sarad bin Abu Manazil, for whom no narrator is mentioned other than Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari, and I found no one who declared him trustworthy except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him among his trustworthy narrators. Therefore Ibn Hajar said, "Acceptable," meaning when corroborated, and I found no one who corroborated him from Habib bin Abu Fadala.Something similar has been narrated through several routes from Hasan, from Imran bin Husayn. Musaddad recorded his hadith (Matalib Aliyah 3098), as did Hakim (1/109) and Harawi in Dhamm Kalam wa Ahlih (249). But Hasan did not hear from Imran bin Husayn, as Ibn Madini and others have stated.
