Uthman bin Affan was sitting on the benches when the muezzin came and called him for the afternoon prayer. He asked for water, performed his ablution, and then said, "By Allah, I am about to tell you a hadith which I would not have related to you were it not confirmed in the Book of Allah."Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'No man performs ablution well, then prays, except that he is forgiven for whatever occurs between that prayer and the next prayer he offers.'"Yahya said that Malik said, "I think he meant this verse, 'And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds drive away evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.' [Hud 11:114]."
Malik narrated it in Kitab al-Tahara (29), and this is his wording, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Humran, with this account. Bukhari narrated it in Kitab al-Wudu (160) through another route from Ibn Shihab, and Muslim narrated it in Kitab al-Tahara (227) through another route from Hisham, both of them from Urwa, from Humran, with this account. In both of their versions, Urwa said, The verse is, "Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs..." [Baqarah 2:159]. The identification of the verse does not occur in Malik's narration, so he said it on his own authority. The details of wudu will come later in the description of the wudu of the Prophet.ﷺ
