The Prophet ﷺ saw a gold ring on one of his companions and turned away from him. The man threw it away and took a ring of iron instead.The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is worse. This is the jewelry of the people of the Fire."So he threw it away and took a ring of silver, and the Prophet ﷺ said nothing about it.
أن النبي ﷺ رأى على بعض أصحابه خاتما من ذهب، فأعرض عنه، فألقاه، واتخذ خاتما من حديد. فقال: هذا شر، هذا حلية أهل النار، فألقاه، فاتخذ خاتما من ورق، فسكت عنه.
Ahmad (6518) and Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (1021) both narrated it from the hadith of Ibn Ajlan, from Amr bin Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Ibn Ajlan and his teacher, for they both make the hadith hasan.
