A man from Bahrain came to the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him, but the Prophet did not return his greeting. The man was wearing a gold ring and a silk garment. He removed them both, then greeted him again, and this time the Prophet ﷺ returned his greeting.The man said, "Messenger of Allah, I came to you just now and you turned away from me."He replied, "There was a burning ember of fire on your hand."The man said, "Then I have come bringing many embers indeed."The Prophet ﷺ said, "What you have brought is of no more use to us than the stones of al-Harrah, but it is merely the enjoyment of worldly life."The man asked, "Then what kind of ring should I wear?"He answered, "A ring of iron, silver, or brass."
أقبل رجل من البحرين إلى النبي ﷺ فسلم، فلم يرد عليه، وكان في يده خاتم من ذهب، وجبة حرير، فألقاهما ثم سلم، فرد عليه السلام، ثم قال: يا رسول الله، أتيتك آنفا فأعرضت عني، فقال: إنه كان في يدك جمرة من نار قال: لقد جئت إذا بجمر كثير، قال: إن ما جئت به ليس بأجزأ عنا من حجارة الحرة، ولكنه متاع الحياة الدنيا قال: فماذا أتختم؟ قال: حلقة من حديد أو ورق أو صفر.
Nasai reported it (5206, 5188), and in Kubra (9461), and Ibn Wahb in Jami (593), and Ahmad (11109), and Ibn Hibban (5489), all of them from the hadith of Amr bin Harith, from Bakr bin Sawada, from Abu Najib, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who said, then he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of Abu Najib, for he was one of the jurists of his time, was well known among the people, and no one criticized him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat.A note, in the small copy of Nasai it appears as "from Abu Bakhtari, from Abu Saeed," which is a printing error. The correct version is "from Abu Najib," because Mizzi did not mention him in Tuhfah, and the Hafiz did not add him in Nukat Ziraf.
