The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a thick Coptic garment from among those Dihya Kalbi had presented to him as a gift, and I gave it to my wife to wear. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "Why have you not worn the Coptic garment?"I replied, "Messenger of Allah, I gave it to my wife."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Tell her to wear an undergarment beneath it. I fear it may reveal the shape of her body."
Ahmad narrated it (21786) from Abu Amir, who said, Zuhayr, meaning Ibn Muhammad, narrated to us, from Abdullah, meaning Ibn Muhammad bin Aqeel, from the son of Usama bin Zayd, that his father Usama said, then he related it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan when there is nothing objectionable in it.Musaddad narrated it, as found in Matalib (2225), from Bishr bin Mufaddal, from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqeel, from Ibn Umar, who said, "A garment and a Syrian cloth were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, so he clothed me with the garment and clothed Usama with the cloth. I went about in my garment, and the Prophet ﷺ said to Usama, 'What have you done with your cloth?' He said, 'I gave it to my wife to wear.' He said, 'Then tell her to wear a thin garment underneath it, so it does not show the shape of her bones to men.'"The correct view is that this hadith is the hadith of Usama, and Zuhayr bin Muhammad is trustworthy and highly reliable among the people of Hijaz. A number of narrators corroborated him, while no one corroborated Bishr bin Mufaddal, who is also trustworthy. His saying "qibtiyyah" refers to the Copts of Egypt, and it means garments of fine linen that the Copts of Egypt used to make. His saying "thick" means coarse, but due to its softness and fineness it shows the shape of what is beneath it.Of similar meaning is what was narrated from Dihyah bin Khalifah Kalbi himself, that he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought some qibti garments, and he gave me a qibtiyyah from them, and said, 'Split it into two pieces, cut one of them into a shirt, and give the other to your wife to use as a headcover.'" Then, when he turned to leave, he said, "And tell your wife to put a garment underneath it so that it does not show her figure."Abu Dawud narrated it (4116) through two routes from Ibn Wahb, who said, Ibn Lahia informed us, from Musa bin Jubayr, that Ubaydullah bin Abbas told him, from Khalid bin Yazid bin Muawiya, from Dihyah bin Khalifah Kalbi. Abu Dawud said, "Yahya bin Ayub narrated it, and he said, 'Abbas bin Ubaydullah bin Abbas.'"I say, Hakim narrated it (4/187) through the route of Yahya bin Ayub, who said, Musa bin Jubayr narrated to me that Abbas bin Ubaydullah bin Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib told him, from Khalid bin Yazid, in similar fashion. Hakim said, "Its chain of transmission is sahih," but Dhahabi commented on this, saying, "There is a break in it," meaning that Khalid bin Yazid bin Muawiya never met Dihyah bin Khalifah Kalbi. So the correct view is that it is the hadith of Usama bin Zayd.
