The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three you need not ask about. A man who breaks away from the community, disobeys his leader, and dies in that state of disobedience. A slave woman or slave man who runs away and then dies. And a woman whose husband is absent, having provided for her worldly needs, yet she displays herself in his absence. Do not ask about them."
Ahmad narrated it (23943), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (4559), as did Hakim (1/119), all of them through the hadith of Abu Abdul-Rahman (Muqri), who said, Haywa bin Shurayh narrated to us, Abu Hani Khawlani Misri informed me that Abu Ali Amr bin Malik Janabi narrated to him that Fadala bin Ubayd told him, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. His statement, "Do not ask about them," means do not ask about the wretchedness of their condition and the ugliness of their fate, and it is a figure of speech indicating the extreme severity of their situation. As for the hadiths that speak of uncovering the face, they are either abrogated after the revelation of the verse on the veil, or the uncovering was permitted in situations that called for it, such as when a woman wished to marry a young man, as happened in the time of the Prophet ﷺ in the story of the woman who offered herself in marriage. For she would necessarily have to uncover her face so that her beauty, or lack thereof, could be recognized. Or it applied to elderly women whom Allah permitted to remove their outer garments without displaying themselves.
