He heard Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, during the year he performed Hajj, while standing on the pulpit, take hold of a lock of hair that was in the hand of one of his guards and say, "People of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this sort of thing and saying, 'The Children of Israil were destroyed only when their women began using such things.'"
أنه سمع معاوية بن أبي سفيان عام حج وهو على المنبر، وتناول قصة من شعر كانت في يد حرسي يقول: يا أهل المدينة أين علماؤكم؟ سمعت رسول الله ﷺ ينهى عن مثل هذه، ويقول: إنما هلكت بنو إسرائيل حين اتخذ هذه نساؤهم.
Malik related it in the Book of Poetry (2) from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and mentioned it. Bukhari related it in the Book of Clothing (5932), and Muslim in the Book of Clothing and Adornment (2127:122), both of them by way of Malik, with the same wording. This story concerns joining hair with false hair.
