He saw a silver ring on the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for just one day, after which people made silver rings for themselves and wore them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cast off his ring, so the people cast off their rings as well.
أنه رأى في يد رسول الله ﷺ خاتما من ورق يوما واحدا، ثم إن الناس اصطنعوا الخواتيم من ورق ولبسوها، فطرح رسول الله ﷺ خاتمه، فطرح الناس خواتيمهم.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Clothing (5868) via Yunus (he is Ibn Yazid al-Ayli), and Muslim in the Book of Clothing (2093: 59) via Ibrahim bin Saad, and (60) via Ziyad (he is Ibn Saad), all three of them from Zuhri, who said, Anas narrated to me, then he related it. His statement, "a ring of silver," is problematic, because it is well known that the ring which the Prophet ﷺ discarded because people began wearing similar ones was in fact a gold ring, as already mentioned in the hadith of Ibn Umar. For this reason, most scholars concluded that Zuhri made an error in mentioning silver in this hadith, and Nawawi, following Qadi Iyad, even attributed this error to all the scholars of hadith.This is what they said. But I hold that the error does not come from Zuhri, but rather from someone below him, because he also narrated from Anas, "The Prophet's ring was made of silver, and its stone was Abyssinian." In another version, it is stated that he wore it on his right hand, and this has been documented in its proper places.
