The Prophet ﷺ gave me a silken garment to wear. I went out wearing it and saw anger on his face, so I tore it up and divided it among my womenfolk. In another wording, he said, "I did not send it to you so that you would wear it. I only sent it to you so that you would tear it into headscarves to distribute among the women."In a narration recorded by Bukhari (2614), the wording is, "The Prophet ﷺ gave me a silken garment as a gift."
Bukhari related it in Libas (5840), and Muslim in Libas (2071:19), via the route of Ghundar, who said, Shubah narrated to us, from Abdul-Malik bin Maysara, from Zayd bin Wahb, from Ali, and he mentioned it.
