We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he went to relieve himself. He then returned, and food was brought to him.I said, "Messenger of Allah, will you not perform ablution?"He replied, "Why? Am I about to pray, that I should perform ablution?"
كنا عند رسول الله ﷺ فأتى الخلاء، ثم إنه رجع فأتي بطعام. فقلت: يا رسول الله: ألا تتوضأ؟ فقال: لم؟ اأصلي فأتوضأ؟
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Menstruation (374), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, from Ibn Uyayna, from Amr bin Dinar, who heard Saeed bin Huwayrith say, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned the same.The compilers of the Sunan, other than Ibn Majah, narrated it, Abu Dawud (3760), Tirmidhi (1847), and Nasai (123), all of them through the route of Ibn Ulaya, who said, Ayub narrated to us, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out from relieving himself and food was brought near him. They said, "Shall we not bring you water for wudu?" He said, "I have only been commanded to perform wudu when I stand for prayer."Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih (35), narrating it through the route of Ibn Ulaya, who is Ismail. Tirmidhi said, Hasan.
