Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab said, "My family sent me to Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, with a cup of water." Israil indicated with three fingers the size of the small container that held strands of the Prophet's ﷺ hair. Whenever someone was struck by the evil eye or some affliction, they would send their water vessel to her. He continued, "I looked into the small bell-shaped container and saw reddish hairs."
أرسلني أهلي إلى أم سلمة زوج النبي ﷺ بقدح من ماء- وقبض إسرائيل ثلاث أصابع من قصة- فيه شعر من شعر النبي ﷺ، وكان إذا أصاب الإنسان عين أو شيء بعث إليها مخضبه، فاطلعت في الجلجل، فرأيت شعرات حمرا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5896) from Malik bin Ismail, who said, "Israil narrated to us, from Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab," and he related it.Ibn Majah (3623) and Ahmad (26535) narrated it through another route from Uthman bin Abdullah, and in it, "dyed with henna and katam."Ibn Abu Umar narrated it, as found in al-Matalib (2257), from Muqri, who said, "Haywa narrated to us, Walid Abu Uthman informed me, from Abu Malik," who said, "He saw some hair from the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, dyed with henna, and it was not a deep red." He said, "We used to wash it with water."Haywa likewise narrated it from Abu Aqeel, who said, "He saw some hair from the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, dyed with henna." He said, "We used to dye it with water, and we would drink that water."
