Some Jews came in to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He asked about them, and the people said, "They are Jews, Messenger of Allah. They do not dye their hair."He said, "Distinguish yourselves from the appearance of the Jews, but do not dye with black."
دخلت يهود على رسول الله ﷺ فسأل عنهم فقالوا: يهود، يا رسول الله، وهم لا يصبعون الشعر، فقال: غيروا سيما اليهود، ولا تغيروا بسواد.

Tabari related it in Tahzib Athar (926) - the newly printed volume - saying, Yunus told me, Abdullah bin Wahb informed us, Ibn Lahia informed me, from Khalid bin Abu Imran, from Saad bin Ishaq bin Kaab bin Ujra, that he heard Anas bin Malik tell him, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Ibn Lahia, for he is criticized, except that the narration of Abadila from him is hasan, and this is one of theirs. Yahya bin Bukayr corroborated him, from Ibn Lahia.Tabarani related it in Awsat - Majma Bahrayn (4288) with his chain of transmission from him, saying, Abdullah bin Lahia told me, from Khalid bin Abu Imran, from Saad bin Ishaq bin Kaab bin Ujra, from Anas bin Malik, who said, "We were one day with the Prophet ﷺ when the Jews came in to see him, and he saw that their beards were white, so he said, 'What is the matter with you that you do not dye them?'" It was said, "They dislike doing so." So the Prophet ﷺ said, "But you should dye them, and beware of black."Haythami said in Majma (5/160), "Tabarani related it in Awsat, and it contains Ibn Lahia, while the rest of its narrators are trustworthy, and it is a hasan hadith."
