Abu Burda said, I was sitting with my father when Ali came and stood over us. He greeted us, then gave Abu Musa some instructions concerning the people's affairs. Then Ali said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Ask Allah for guidance,' and by that he meant guidance along the path, 'and ask Allah for soundness,' and by that he meant the steady aim of your arrow. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me from placing my ring on this finger or this one," meaning the index and middle fingers.Abu Burda said, He was standing at the time, and I do not know which of the two he indicated.Ali continued, "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me from the mithara and the qassiyya."We said to him, "Commander of the Believers, what is the mithara?"He replied, "Something women make for their husbands to place on their saddles."We said, "And what is the qassiyya?"He said, "Garments that come to us from Syria, striped, with patterns resembling citrons."Abu Burda said, When I saw the sabani garments, I recognized that those were what he meant.
Ahmad (1124) narrated it from Ali bin Asim, "Asim bin Kulayb Jarmi told us, from Abu Burda bin Abu Musa," who said, and then he mentioned it.Its isnad is hasan because of Asim bin Kulayb, for his hadith is hasan, and likewise Ali bin Asim, although there is some weakness in him, his hadith is nonetheless deemed hasan when it has a basis elsewhere. His statement, "the sibaniyyah," is a reference to Sibin, a town in Maghrib, and it is a type of garment made of linen, the coarsest kind there is.
