The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man from a nation before you was strutting about in a fine garment, full of arrogance. So Allah commanded the earth, and it seized him, and he will keep sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: خرج رجل ممن كان قبلكم في حلة له يختال فيها، فأمر الله الأرض فأخذته فهو يتجلجل فيها- أو قال: يتلجلج فيها- إلى يوم القيامة.
Hannad reported it in Zuhd (842), and from his route Tirmidhi (2491), from Abu Ahwas, and Abdullah reported it in the additions to Musnad (7074), through the narration of Muhammad bin Fudayl, and Bazzar reported it in his Musnad (2407), through the narration of Jareer, all three of them from Ata bin Saaib, from his father, from Abdullah bin Amr, who mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a sahih hadith."Its chain is hasan, for Ata bin Saaib was among those whose memory became confused later in life, and Ibn Fudayl was among those who narrated from him after this confusion set in. As for Abu Ahwas and Jareer, it is not known whether they narrated from him before the confusion or after it. But it appears likely that he did not err in this narration, since it rests on sound foundations.Bazzar said, "We do not know of this hadith being narrated from Abdullah bin Amr except by this route, with this chain," meaning through the route of Ata bin Saaib.
