The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Among you is one who will fight for its interpretation just as I fought for its revelation."Abu Bakr and Umar stood up, but he said, "No, rather it is the one mending the sandal."Ali was mending his sandal at the time.
قال رسول الله ﷺ: إن منكم من يقاتل على تأويله كما قاتلت على تنزيله. قال: فقام أبو بكر وعمر، فقال: لا ولكن خاصف النعل. وعلي يخصف نعله.
Reported by Ahmad (11289), Nasai in Kubra (8488), Ibn Hibban (6937), and Hakim (3/122-123), all through routes from Ismail bin Raja, from his father, from Abu Saeed Khudri, and he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan on account of Ismail's father, who is Raja bin Rabia Zubaydi, for he is hasan al-hadith.
