We visited an elderly man named Muhajir, and I was wearing a sandal with two straps. I had stopped wearing it because it had become conspicuous.He asked, "What is this?"I replied, "I wanted to stop wearing it because it draws attention."He said, "Do not abandon it, for the sandals of the Prophet ﷺ were like this."

Harith bin Abu Usama narrated it - Bughyat Bahith (577) - and from him Abu Naeem in Marifat Sahabah (6218) - from Ashhal bin Hatim, who said, our teacher Ziyad Abu Amr narrated to us, and he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Ashhal bin Hatim, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan when he does not bring something that is rejected, and this is something that has a firm basis.Ziyad Abu Amr is Ibn Abu Muslim, also said to be Ibn Muslim Abu Amr Farra, and there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan. He was among the senior followers of the Successors and did not meet any of the companions.As for what Ibn Abdul-Barr said in Istiab (1513), "The Muhajir was a man among the companions, and it is narrated that the sandal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had two straps," and likewise what those who followed him said, this is unlikely. His describing the sandal of the Prophet ﷺ as having two straps does not necessarily mean he was one of the companions, for someone among the Successors or others who saw it might also describe it that way.
