The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wears a garment of vanity in this world, Allah will clothe him in a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection, then set it ablaze with fire."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من لبس ثوب شهرة في الدنيا، ألبسه الله ثوب مذلة يوم القيامة، ثم ألهب فيه نارا.
It was narrated by Ibn Majah (3606, 3607), and this is his wording, and Abu Dawud (4029, 4030), and Ahmad (5664), all of them from the hadith of Uthman bin Mughira, from Muhajir, from Abdullah bin Umar, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhajir, who is Ibn Amr al-Nabbal (with a nun and a doubled letter ba), a Levantine narrator from whom a group of people transmitted. Ibn Hibban rated him trustworthy, and no criticism of him is known. He is among the successors who are predominantly characterized by truthfulness and reliability. Munziri also graded it hasan in al-Targhib (3214).In the same meaning, it has been narrated from Abu Dharr, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said, "Whoever wears a garment of vanity, Allah will turn away from him until he takes it off, whenever he takes it off." This was narrated by Ibn Majah (3608), Bayhaqi in al-Shuab (5820), and Abu Naeem in al-Hilyah (4/190-191), all of them from the hadith of Waki bin Mihraz al-Naji, who said, Uthman bin Jahm narrated to us, from Zirr bin Hubaysh, from Abu Dharr, and he related it. Abu Naeem said, "Waki alone transmitted it." I say, in addition to Waki being the sole transmitter, his teacher Uthman bin al-Jahm is unknown, for no one narrated from him except Waki, though Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, following his usual practice.
