The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and saw a disheveled man whose hair was unkempt, so he said, "Could this man not find something to tidy his hair with?" Then he saw another man wearing dirty clothes and said, "Could this man not find water to wash his garment with?"
أتانا رسول الله ﷺ فرأى رجلا شعثا قد تفرق شعره فقال: أما كان يجد هذا ما يسكن به شعره، ورأى رجلا آخر وعليه ثياب وسخة، فقال: أما كان هذا يجد ماء يغسل به ثوبه.
Reported by Abu Dawud (4062), Nasai (5236), and Ahmad (14850), and Ibn Hibban (5483) and Hakim (4/186) graded it sahih, all of them from the hadith of Uzai, from Hassan bin Atiya, from Muhammad bin Munkadir, from Jabir, who related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim)."His saying "yuskinu" comes from taskin, meaning he sets it right and brings together what was scattered of it.
