Abdullah bin Abbas said, "When the Haruriyyah went out in rebellion, I came to Ali, and he said, 'Go to these people.' So I put on the finest Yemeni garments I had."Abu Zumayl said, "Ibn Abbas was a handsome man with a commanding presence."Ibn Abbas continued, "I came to them, and they said, 'Welcome, Ibn Abbas. What is this garment?'I replied, 'What fault do you find with me? I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing the finest of garments.'"
حدثني عبد الله بن عباس قال: لما خرجت الحرورية أتيت عليا فقال: انت هؤلاء القوم، فلبست أحسن ما يكون من حلل اليمن- قال أبو زميل: وكان ابن عباس رجلا جميلا جهيرا- قال ابن عباس: فأتيتهم فقالوا: مرحبا بك يا ابن عباس، ما هذه الحلة؟ قال: ما تعيبون علي؟ لقد رأيت على رسول الله ﷺ أحسن ما يكون من الحلل.
Abu Dawud (4037), Hakim (2/150), and Bayhaqi (8/179) all narrated it from the hadith of Umar bin Yunus bin Qasim al-Yamami, who said, Ikrima bin Ammar told us, Abu Zumayl told us, and he related it. The wording given is that of Abu Dawud. Hakim mentioned it at greater length. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Ikrima bin Ammar, for there is disagreement about him, except that his hadith is hasan when he does not err.It has also been narrated from a man among the sons of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, from his father, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever gives up wearing a fine garment, though he is able to afford it, out of humility, Allah will clothe him with a robe of honor, and whoever marries for the sake of Allah Most High, Allah will crown him with the crown of sovereignty."Abu Dawud (4778) narrated it through Muhammad bin Ajlan, from Saeed bin Wahb, from a man among the sons of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, from his father, and he related it. The son of the companion is unidentified, it is not known who he is.
