I heard Abdullah bin Amr bin As when a man asked him, "Are we not among the poor of the Muhajirin?"Abdullah said to him, "Do you have a wife to whom you return?"The man replied, "Yes."Abdullah asked, "Do you have a dwelling in which you live?"He replied, "Yes."Abdullah said, "Then you are among the wealthy."The man said, "But I have a servant."Abdullah said, "Then you are among the kings."Abu Abd al-Rahman said, Three men came to Abdullah bin Amr bin As while I was with him and said, "Abu Muhammad, by Allah, we have nothing at all. No money, no riding animal, no possessions."He said to them, "It is up to you. If you wish, return to us and we will give you whatever Allah makes available for you. If you wish, we will mention your situation to the ruler. And if you wish, you may endure patiently, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The poor of the Muhajirin will enter Paradise forty years before the wealthy on the Day of Resurrection.'"They said, "Then we will be patient and ask for nothing."
Muslim narrated it in Zuhd (2979) from Abu Tahir Ahmad bin Amr bin Sarh, who said, Ibn Wahb told us, Abu Hani told me, he heard Abu Abdul-Rahman Hubli say, then he mentioned it.As for what has been narrated as a raised hadith from a group of companions, "Whoever among you wakes up safe in his body, secure in his community, having his day's provision, it is as if the whole world had been gathered for him," all of these narrations are daif, and none of them meets the standard of Jami Kamil. As for what has been narrated from Thawban, who said, the Messenger of Allah said to me, "Do not settle in the villages, for the dweller of the villages is like the dweller of the graves," this is munkar. Bukhari narrated it in Adab al-Mufrad (579, 580) through two chains from Baqiya bin Walid, who said, Safwan told me, I heard Rashid bin Saad say, I heard Thawban say, then he mentioned it.Baqiya bin Walid is the one from Hims, and the people of knowledge have well-known remarks about him regarding tadlis and other matters. As for the tadlis, he explicitly stated the mode of transmission, so that suspicion is removed, but there is other criticism of him. Sufyan bin Uyayna said, "Do not accept from Baqiya what concerns the sunnah, but accept from him what concerns reward and other matters." Ibn Mubarak said, "He used to write from whoever came to him or turned away." Safwan's book was requested from him (he is Ibn Amr Hubli, trustworthy) but he did not produce it. Khatib said, "There are munkar reports in his hadith," and Abu Hatim said, "His hadith is recorded but not relied upon."These statements from the scholars indicate that Baqiya bin Walid erred in this hadith, and that it is among his munkar reports, and this hadith has no established basis. For the prohibition against dwelling in villages was never established, neither in the time of the Prophet nor in the time of the rightly guided caliphs. Villages were numerous, and none of them commanded moving from the villages to the cities. So this hadith is counted among the strange and munkar reports of Baqiya.Nor is it helped by what Ibn Adi narrated in Kamil (3/1196) through the route of Abu Mahdi Saeed bin Sinan Hubli, from Rashid bin Saad, from Thawban, wherein it says, "O Thawban, do not settle in the villages, for the dweller of the villages is like the dweller of the graves, and do not accept authority over ten people, for whoever is put in authority over ten will come on the Day of Judgment with his hand shackled to his neck, either released by justice or bound tighter by wrongdoing."For Saeed bin Sinan Hubli is daif. Ahmad and Ibn Main declared him daif. Bukhari said, "His hadith is munkar." Nasai said, "His hadith is to be abandoned." Ibn Adi mentioned him in his Kamil. So perhaps this statement was said to Thawban in a particular context, and one of the narrators raised it up to the Prophet.
