The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has commanded me to recite the Quran to you."He then recited, "Those who disbelieved from among the People of the Scripture..." [Bayyinah 98:1].Within this surah he recited, "If the son of Adam were given a valley full of wealth, he would ask for a second. If he were given a second, he would ask for a third. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, yet Allah turns in mercy to whoever repents. The true religion in the sight of Allah is the upright way, not that of the polytheists, nor the Jews, nor the Christians. Whoever does good, his reward will not be denied."
إن رسول الله ﷺ قال: إن الله أمرني أن أقرأ عليك القرآن، قال: فقرأ: {لم يكن الذين كفروا من أهل الكتب} [البينة ١] قال: فقرأ فيها: ولو أن ابن آدم سأل واديا من مال فأعطيه، لسأل ثانيا، ولو سأل ثانيا فأعطيه لسأل ثالثا، ولا يملأ جوف ابن آدم إلا التراب، ويتوب الله على من تاب، وإن ذلك الدين عند الله الحنيفية، غير المشركة ولا اليهودية، ولا النصرانية، ومن يفعل خيرا فلن يكفره.
Narrated by Tirmidhi (3898), Ahmad (21202), Tayalisi (541), and Hakim (2/224 and 531), all through the route of Shubah, from Asim, who said, I heard Zirr bin Hubaysh narrating from Ubayy bin Kaab, who said, and then he mentioned it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." Hakim said, "Sahih in its chain." Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Asim bin Bahdala, for he is hasan in his hadith transmission.His statement, "Then he recited, "Those who disbelieve among the People of the Book"," meaning the Prophet ﷺ recited to the end of the surah, which is eight verses, the last of them being, "Their reward with their Lord is Gardens of Eden beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. That is for whoever fears his Lord" [Bayyinah 98:8]. Then he mentioned the hadith, "If the son of Adam had..." Since there was no separation made between Surah Bayyinah and the hadith mentioned after it, Asim bin Bahdala assumed, though he was an authority in recitation, that he used to make mistakes in hadith transmission, and this is one of those instances, for he did not distinguish between the surah and the hadith, and he transmitted it as though it were all part of the surah. That is why he phrased it as, "Then he recited within it." It is also possible that it was originally part of the Quran and was later abrogated from it.As for what was narrated from Burayda bin Husayb, who said, I heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting in prayer, "If the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would seek to have a second one. And if he were given a second, he would seek to have a third. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah turns in mercy to whoever repents." This is daif.It was narrated by Bazzar, Kashf Astar (3634), Ruyani in his Musnad (44), and Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil (2036), all through routes from Abu Ala, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from his father, and then he mentioned it. Haythami said in Majma (10/244), "Bazzar narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Subayh Abu Ala, who is trustworthy." But Abu Ala is Subayh Hudhali, an unknown narrator, whom no one deemed trustworthy except Ibn Hibban, according to his own methodology.
