The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day and prayed over the people of Uhud the prayer for the dead, then went to the pulpit and said, "I will precede you, and I will be a witness over you. By Allah, I am looking at my Pond right now, and I have been given the keys to the treasures of the earth, or the keys of the earth. By Allah, I do not fear that you will associate partners with Allah after me, but I fear that you will compete with one another over it."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Softening of Hearts (6426), and Muslim in the Book of Virtues (2296:30), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Layth bin Saad narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Abu Khayr, from Uqba bin Amir, who related it.Regarding his saying, "By Allah, I do not fear that you will commit shirk after me," Nawawi said, "Its meaning is that his nation ﷺ will not apostatize altogether." That is, they will not fall into shirk against Allah as a whole.
