I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ in the lava-rock plain of Madinah when Mount Uhud came into view. He said, "Abu Dharr."I replied, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "It would not please me to possess gold equal to this Uhud, with three nights passing while I still had a single dinar of it left, except for something I set aside to repay a debt. Rather, I would say with it among the servants of Allah like this, and like this, and like this," gesturing to his right, to his left, and behind him. Then he walked on and said, "Those who have the most are the ones with the least on the Day of Resurrection, except for one who says like this, and like this, and like this," gesturing to his right, to his left, and behind him, "and how few they are."Then he said to me, "Stay where you are. Do not move until I come back to you."He set off into the darkness of the night until he disappeared from sight. Then I heard a voice raised loudly, and I feared that someone had attacked the Prophet ﷺ. I wanted to go to him, but I remembered his words to me, "Do not move until I come back to you," so I did not move until he returned.I said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard a voice that alarmed me," and I told him about it.He asked, "Did you really hear it?"I said, "Yes."He said, "That was Jibril. He came to me and said, 'Whoever from your nation dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.'"I asked, "Even if he committed adultery and even if he stole?"He answered, "Even if he committed adultery and even if he stole."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Riqaq (6444), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (94:32), both through the route of Amash, from Zayd bin Wahb, from Abu Dharr, who mentioned it.
