Abu Hurairah reported,

He heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "There were three men among the Children of Israil, a leper, a bald man, and a blind man. Allah wished to test them, so He sent an angel to them.The angel came to the leper and asked, 'What thing is most beloved to you?'He replied, 'A good complexion, a good skin, and to be rid of what has made people find me repulsive.'So the angel wiped him, and his repulsiveness left him, and he was given a good complexion and good skin.The angel then asked, 'And what wealth is most beloved to you?'He answered, 'Camels.'" Or he said, "Cattle." Ishaq was uncertain, except that one of the two, the leper or the bald man, said camels and the other said cattle."So he was given a pregnant she-camel, and the angel said, 'May Allah bless you in it.'Then the angel came to the bald man and asked, 'What thing is most beloved to you?'He replied, 'Good hair, and to be rid of this which has made people find me repulsive.'So the angel wiped him, and it left him, and he was given good hair.Then the angel asked, 'And what wealth is most beloved to you?'He answered, 'Cattle.'So he was given a pregnant cow, and the angel said, 'May Allah bless you in it.'Then the angel came to the blind man and asked, 'What thing is most beloved to you?'He replied, 'That Allah restore my sight to me so that I may see people.'So the angel wiped him, and Allah restored his sight to him.The angel then asked, 'And what wealth is most beloved to you?'He answered, 'Sheep.'So he was given a pregnant ewe. The first two animals bred and the third gave birth, until this one had a valley full of camels, this one had a valley full of cattle, and this one had a valley full of sheep.Then the angel came to the leper in his former form and appearance and said, 'I am a poor man. My means have been cut off during my journey, and today I have no one to bring me through except Allah and then you. I ask you, by the One who gave you the good complexion, the good skin, and the wealth, for a camel by which I may complete my journey.'The man replied, 'My obligations are many.'The angel said to him, 'I feel as though I know you. Were you not a leper whom people found repulsive, a poor man, and then Allah gave to you?'He said, 'I only inherited this wealth from generation upon generation.'The angel said, 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to what you were.'Then the angel came to the bald man in his former form and said to him the same as he had said to the first, and the bald man gave him the same response. So the angel said, 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to what you were.'Then the angel came to the blind man in his former form and appearance and said, 'I am a poor man and a wayfarer. My means have been cut off during my journey, and today I have no one to bring me through except Allah and then you. I ask you, by the One who restored your sight to you, for a sheep by which I may complete my journey.'The man replied, 'I was indeed blind, and Allah restored my sight to me. So take what you wish and leave what you wish. By Allah, I will not trouble you today over anything you take for the sake of Allah.'The angel said, 'Keep your wealth, for you have only been tested. Allah is pleased with you and displeased with your two companions.'"

عن أبي هريرة

أنه سمع النبي ﷺ يقول: إن ثلاثة في بني إسرائيل، أبرص وأقرع وأعمى، فأراد الله أن يبتليهم، فبعث إليهم ملكا، فأتى الأبرص فقال: أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال: لون حسن وجلد حسن ويذهب عني الذي قد قذرني الناس، قال: فمسحه فذهب عنه قذره وأعطي لونا حسنا وجلدا حسنا، قال: فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال: الإبل أو قال: البقر- شك إسحاق، إلا أن الأبرص أو الأقرع قال أحدهما: الإبل، وقال الآخر: البقر- قال: فأعطي ناقة عشراء، فقال: بارك الله لك فيها، قال: فأتى الأقرع فقال: أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال: شعر حسن ويذهب عني هذا الذي قذرني الناس، قال: فمسحه فذهب عنه، وأعطي شعرا حسنا، قال: فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال: البقر، فأعطي بقرة حاملا، فقال: بارك الله لك فيها، قال: فأتى الأعمى فقال: أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال: أن يرد الله إلي بصري فأبصر به الناس، قال: فمسحه فرد الله إليه بصره، قال: فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال: الغنم، فأعطي شاة والدا، فأنتج هذان وولد هذا، قال: فكان لهذا واد من الإبل، ولهذا واد من البقر، ولهذا واد من الغنم. قال: ثم إنه أتى الأبرص في صورته وهيئته، فقال: رجل مسكين، قد انقطعت بي الحبال في سفري، فلا بلاغ لي اليوم إلا بالله ثم بك، أسألك بالذي أعطاك اللون الحسن والجلد الحسن والمال، بعيرا أتبلغ عليه في سفري، فقال: الحقوق كثيرة، فقال له: كأني أعرفك، ألم تكن أبرص يقذرك الناس؟ فقيرا فأعطاك الله؟ فقال: إنما ورثت كابرا عن كابر، فقال: إن كنت كاذبا، فصيرك الله إلى ما كنت. قال: وأتى الأقرع في صورته، فقال له مثل ما قال لهذا، ورد عليه مثل ما رد على هذا، فقال: إن كنت كاذبا فصيرك الله إلى ما كنت. قال: وأتى الأعمى في صورته وهيئته، فقال: رجل مسكين وابن سبيل، انقطعت بي الحبال في سفري، فلا بلاغ لي اليوم إلا بالله ثم بك، أسألك بالذي رد عليك بصرك، شاة أتبلغ بها في سفري، فقال: قد كنت أعمى فرد الله إلي، بصري، فخذ ما شئت، ودع ماشئت، فوالله لا أجهدك اليوم شيئا أخذته الله، فقال: أمسك مالك، فإنما ابتليتم، فقد رضي عنك وسخط على صاحبيك.
