It was narrated by Ahmad (21415), Nasai in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (354), Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (449), and Tabarani in Dua (1648), all of them from the hadith of Muhammad bin Wasi, from Abdullah bin Samit, from Abu Dharr, who mentioned it in a long hadith. It has been discussed in the tafsir of Surah Maidah, verse 54. Its chain of transmission is sahih.As for what has been narrated from Abdullah bin Amr, who said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There are two qualities, whoever has both of them Allah records him as thankful and patient, and whoever lacks both of them Allah does not record him as thankful nor as patient. Whoever looks, in matters of his religion, to someone above him and follows his example, and looks, in matters of his worldly life, to someone below him and praises Allah for what He has favored him with over that person, Allah records him as thankful and patient. And whoever looks, in matters of his religion, to someone below him, and looks, in matters of his worldly life, to someone above him, and grieves over what he has missed of that, Allah does not record him as thankful nor as patient."This is daif. It was narrated by Tirmidhi (2512) through the route of Abdullah bin Mubarak, and it is also found in his Zuhd (180), from Muthanna bin Sabbah, from Amr bin Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith," meaning daif. And it is as he said, for Muthanna bin Sabbah is daif.On this subject there are also narrations from Anas, Abdullah bin Masud, and Abu Saeed Khudri, but there is criticism regarding their chains of transmission.
