Reported by Abu Dawud (5094), Tirmidhi (3427), Nasai (5486), Ibn Majah (3884), Ahmad (26616, 26704), Ibn Sunni in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla (177), and Hakim (1/519), all of them through various routes from Mansur, from Shaybi, from Umm Salama, who related it. The wording given here follows Tirmidhi.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith."Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs, though they did not include it. Someone might mistakenly assume that Shaybi did not hear from Umm Salama, but that is not so, for he met both Ayesha and Umm Salama, and he narrated extensively from both of them."The discussion of this is given in detail in Adhkar.The meaning of reliance on Allah, reliance does not mean sitting back from earning a livelihood. Rather, reliance means striving and exerting effort to seek provision through lawful means, then entrusting to Allah whatever He has decreed for one.It is related that Umar bin Khattab met some people from Yemen and asked, "Who are you?" They said, "We are the ones who rely on Allah." He said, "Rather, you are merely the ones who talk. The one who truly relies on Allah is the one who sows his seed in the ground, and then places his reliance upon Allah ."Ibn Abu Dunya related this in Tawakkul (10) with his chain of transmission from Muawiya bin Qurra, that Umar bin Khattab met some people, and he related it.Muawiya bin Qurra did not meet Umar bin Khattab, for he was born in the year 37 AH.Abdullah bin Masud said, "The verse in the Quran that most fully expresses entrusting oneself to Allah is "And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him" [Talaq 65:3]."And in another version, "And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out" [Talaq 65:2].This is mentioned by Ibn Abu Dunya in Tawakkul (50), Abdul-Razzaq (370–371), and others.Some wise men said, "Reliance on Allah has three levels. The first is abandoning complaint. The second is contentment. The third is love."Abandoning complaint is the level of patience, contentment is the heart's tranquility with what Allah has apportioned to him, which is higher than the first, and love is that his love should match whatever Allah does with him. So the first is for the ascetics, the second is for the truthful, and the third is for the messengers.This is mentioned by Ibn Abu Dunya in Tawakkul (46).
