Ubayy bin Kab said, My father and I went out seeking knowledge among this district of the Ansar before they passed away. The first person we met was Abu Yusr, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, accompanied by a young servant of his who was carrying a bundle of pages. Abu Yusr was wearing a striped cloak and a Maafiri garment, and his servant likewise wore a striped cloak and a Maafiri garment. My father said to him, "Uncle, I see traces of anger on your face."He replied, "Yes. So-and-so, son of so-and-so, of the Banu Haram, owed me a debt. I went to his family and greeted them and asked, 'Is he there?' They said, 'No.' Then a young son of his came out, and I asked him, 'Where is your father?' He said, 'He heard your voice and went into my mother's bed-chamber.' So I called out, 'Come out to me, for I know where you are.' He came out, and I asked him, 'What made you hide from me?'He said, 'By Allah, I will tell you the truth and not lie to you. By Allah, I feared that if I spoke with you, I would lie to you, and if I made you a promise, I would break it. You are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and by Allah, I am in financial difficulty.'I said, 'By Allah?' He said, 'By Allah.' I said, 'By Allah?' He said, 'By Allah.' I said, 'By Allah?' He said, 'By Allah.'So he brought me his promissory note, and I wiped it out with my hand and said, 'If you find the means to pay, then pay me. Otherwise, you are absolved.' I bear witness that these two eyes of mine saw," and he placed his two fingers on his eyes, "and these two ears of mine heard, and this heart of mine retained it," and he pointed to where his heart hangs, "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever grants respite to one in difficulty, or remits the debt for him, Allah will shade him under His shade.'"I said to him, "Uncle, what if you took your servant's cloak and gave him your Maafiri garment, and took his Maafiri garment and gave him your cloak, so that you would have a complete outfit and he would have a complete outfit?"He stroked my head and said, "O Allah, bless him. Nephew, these two eyes of mine saw, and these two ears of mine heard, and this heart of mine retained it," and he pointed to where his heart hangs, "the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Feed them from what you eat, and clothe them from what you wear.' For me to give him something of the goods of this world is easier upon me than that he should take from my good deeds on the Day of Resurrection."Then we proceeded until we came to Jabir bin Abdullah in his mosque. He was praying in a single garment, wrapping himself in it. I stepped over the people until I sat between him and the qiblah and said, "May Allah have mercy on you, are you praying in a single garment when your outer garment is right beside you?"He gestured to my chest with his hand like this, spreading his fingers and curving them, and said, "I wanted some fool like you to come in upon me and see how I do this, so that he would do the same. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in this very mosque of ours, and in his hand was a date-palm stalk of the Ibn Tab variety. He saw some phlegm on the qiblah wall of the mosque and scraped it off with the stalk. Then he turned to us and said, 'Which of you would love that Allah turn away from him?' We were struck with awe. Then he said, 'Which of you would love that Allah turn away from him?' We were struck with awe. Then he said, 'Which of you would love that Allah turn away from him?' We said, 'None of us, Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'When one of you stands to pray, Allah is before his face, so let him not spit before him, nor to his right. Let him spit to his left under his left foot. But if it comes upon him suddenly, then let him do this with his garment,' and he folded part of his garment over the other part. Then he said, 'Bring me some perfume.' A young man of the district stood up and ran to his family and came back with some scented paste in his palm. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and placed it on the tip of the stalk, then he smeared it over the spot of the phlegm."Jabir said, "From there comes your custom of placing perfume in your mosques. We marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Batn Buwat, while he was searching for Majdi bin Amr al-Juhani. The riding camel was being shared, with five, six, or seven of us taking turns on it. The turn of one of the Ansar came on his camel. He made it kneel and mounted it, then urged it on, but it was somewhat stubborn with him. He said to it, 'Get on, may Allah curse you!'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Who is this cursing his camel?'The man said, 'It is I, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'Get down from it. Do not accompany us with one that has been cursed. Do not invoke curses upon yourselves, do not invoke curses upon your children, and do not invoke curses upon your property. Do not coincide with an hour from Allah in which a request is granted, lest He answer you.'We continued with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until, in the late afternoon, we descended upon a watering place of the Arabs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Who will go ahead of us, line the basin with clay, drink, and give us to drink?'"Jabir said, "I stood up and said, 'Here is a man, Messenger of Allah!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Which man will go with Jabir?' Jabbar bin Sakhr stood up. We went to the well and drew a bucket or two into the basin, then plastered it with clay, then drew water into it until we filled it up.The first to come upon us was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'Will the two of you permit me?' We said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah.' He brought his she-camel forward and she drank. He let her loose and she lifted her head and turned away. Then he turned her aside and made her kneel. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the basin and performed ablution from it. Then I stood and performed ablution from the leftover water of his ablution.Jabbar bin Sakhr went off to relieve himself, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to pray. I had on a striped cloak, and I tried to cross its two ends over my shoulders, but it was not long enough for me. It had tassels at its corners, so I turned it upside down, then crossed its ends, then secured it tightly. I came and stood on the left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He took my hand and turned me around until he placed me on his right. Then Jabbar bin Sakhr came, performed ablution, and stood on the left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took both of us by the hand and pushed us until he placed us behind him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept glancing at me without my noticing, then I became aware of him. He gestured with his hand like this, meaning, tighten your waist. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he said, 'Jabir.'I said, 'At your service, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'When it is wide, then cross its two ends. When it is narrow, then tie it around your waist.'We marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the daily ration of each man among us was a single date. He would suck on it, then wrap it back in his cloth. We would knock down leaves with our bows and eat them, until our jaw corners became sore. I swear, one of us missed his date one day, so we took him to the Prophet and confirmed that he had not received it. He was given it and stood up to take it.We marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we came down into a wide valley. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went off to relieve himself, and I followed him with a vessel of water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked around but saw nothing to conceal himself behind, when suddenly he noticed two trees at the edge of the valley. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to one of them, took hold of one of its branches, and said, 'Yield to me by Allah's permission.' It yielded along with him like a camel led by a nose-ring submitting to its driver, until he came to the other tree. He took hold of one of its branches and said, 'Yield to me by Allah's permission.' It yielded with him likewise, until, when he was midway between the two of them, he brought them together and said, 'Join over me by Allah's permission.' They joined together."Jabir said, "I rushed away, fearing that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ might sense my nearness and move further away," and Muhammad bin Abbad said, "I followed him." "I sat talking to myself, and suddenly I turned and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming toward me, and the two trees had separated, each standing on its own trunk. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pause, and he gestured with his head like this," and Abu Ismail gestured with his head right and left, "then he came forward. When he reached me he said, 'Jabir, did you see where I stood?' I said, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Then go to the two trees and cut a branch from each of them. Bring them, and when you reach where I stood, place one branch on your right and one on your left.'"Jabir said, "I got up, took a stone, broke it, and sharpened it, and it became sharp for me. I came to the two trees and cut a branch from each of them, then came back dragging them, until I reached where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had stood. I placed one branch on my right and one on my left, then caught up with him and said, 'I have done it, Messenger of Allah. Why did you ask for this?'He said, 'I passed by two graves whose occupants were being punished, and I wished, by my intercession, that they be granted some relief, as long as the two branches remain fresh.'"He said, "We came to the camp, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Jabir, call out for water for ablution.'I called, 'Is there no water for ablution? Is there no water for ablution? Is there no water for ablution?' Then I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I cannot find a single drop in the caravan.' Now there was a man of the Ansar who used to cool water for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in waterskins hung on a frame of palm fronds. He said to me, 'Go to so-and-so, son of so-and-so, of the Ansar, and see if there is anything in his waterskins.'I went to him and looked, but I found nothing in them except a drop in the spout of one of the skins. Had I emptied it out, the dryness of the skin would have absorbed it. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, I found nothing in them except a drop in the spout of one of the skins. Had I emptied it, the dryness of the skin would have absorbed it.'He said, 'Go and bring it to me.' I brought it to him. He took it in his hand and began to say something I could not understand, while squeezing it with his hand. Then he gave it back to me and said, 'Jabir, call out for a large bowl.'I said, 'O bowl of the caravan!' It was brought, carried, and I placed it before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put his hand into the bowl like this, spreading it out and parting his fingers, and placed it at the bottom of the bowl. He said, 'Take it, Jabir, and pour upon me, saying, "In the name of Allah."' I poured upon him and said, 'In the name of Allah,' and I saw the water gushing forth from between the fingers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the bowl bubbled up and overflowed until it was filled. He said, 'Jabir, call out, whoever has need of water.' The people came and drew water until they had drunk their fill. I said, 'Is there anyone left who needs water?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lifted his hand from the bowl, and it was full. The people complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of hunger, and he said, 'Perhaps Allah will feed you.' We came to the seashore, and the sea heaved, casting up a sea creature. We kindled a fire on its side and cooked, roasted, and ate until we were satisfied."Jabir said, "I, along with so-and-so and so-and-so, until he counted five, entered into one of its eye-sockets, and no one could see us, until we came out. We took one of its ribs and bent it into an arch, then summoned the largest man in the caravan, on the largest camel in the caravan, with the largest saddle in the caravan, and he passed beneath it without having to lower his head."
