Khawla bint Yasar came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have only one garment, and I menstruate in it. What should I do?"He replied, "When you become pure, wash it and then pray in it."She asked, "What if the blood does not come out?"He said, "Water is enough for you, and its trace will not harm you."
Reported by Abu Dawud (365) and Ahmad (8939), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Isa bin Talha, from Abu Hurairah, who said, and then he mentioned it. Bayhaqi also reported it in Sunan al-Kubra (2/408) through the route of Abdullah bin Wahb and Uthman bin Salih, both from Ibn Lahia, in a similar manner. Its chain is hasan because of Ibn Lahia, who has been criticized, except that the narration of the Abadila, among whom is Abdullah bin Wahb, is accepted, and likewise the narration of Qutayba bin Saeed. As for when a woman washes the blood and it does not go away, she should change it with some yellow dye or saffron, as Ayesha said, and this is sahih as her own statement. Darimi reported it (1014) from Abu Numan, who said, Thabit bin Yazid narrated to us, who said, Asim narrated to us, from Muaza Adawiyya, from Ayesha, and then she mentioned it. Its chain is sahih, and Thabit is al-Ahwal, one of the narrators found among the group. He also reported it through the route of Shuba, from Yazid Rishk, who said, I heard Muaza Adawiyya say that a woman said to Ayesha, "There is blood on my garment, so I wash it and it does not go away, should I cut it out?" She said, "Water is purifying." Its chain is sahih. As for what Abu Dawud reported (357) through the route of Umm Hasan, meaning the grandmother of Abu Bakr Adawi, from Muaza, who said, I asked Ayesha about a menstruating woman whose garment is stained with blood. She said, "She should wash it, and if its trace does not go away, she should change it with something yellow." She said, "I used to menstruate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for three menstrual periods altogether without washing a garment of mine." In this narration is Umm Hasan, who is unknown, as Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar have said.
