Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

When this verse was revealed, "And whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it" [Baqarah 2:284], something entered their hearts from it which had never entered their hearts from anything before. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Say, 'We hear and we obey and we submit.'"So Allah cast faith into their hearts, and Allah the Exalted revealed, "Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. It will have what it has earned, and against it what it has acquired. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or err" [Baqarah 2:286].He said, "I have done so.""Our Lord, and do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us."He said, "I have done so.""And pardon us and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector" [Baqarah 2:286].He said, "I have done so."

Sahih
