A woman asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Messenger of Allah, what do you say about one of us whose garment is stained with menstrual blood? What should she do?"He replied, "She should scrape it off, then sprinkle it with water, then pray in it."
سألت امرأة رسول الله ﷺ فقالت: يا رسول الله أرأيت إحدانا إذا أصاب ثوبها الدم من الحيضة، كيف تصنع؟ فقال التقرضه، ثم لتنضحه بماء، ثم لتصلي.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on purification (166, the narration of Abu Musab Zuhri) from Hisham bin Urwa, from Fatimah bint Munzir bin Zubayr (the wife of Hisham), from Asma, and she mentioned the hadith. Bukhari transmitted it through this route in the chapter on menstruation (307), and Muslim in the chapter on purification (110). In one narration found in Bukhari (227), it reads, "Scrape it off, then rub it with water, sprinkle it, and pray in it."In some of the narrations it appears that the woman asking the question was Asma herself.A note of caution, what Yahya Laythi narrated in his Muwatta (103) from Malik, adding between Hisham bin Urwa and Fatimah bint Munzir the phrase "from his father," is a mistake on his part. See Tamhid (22/229).I say, others besides Malik also narrated it from Hisham, among them Hammad bin Zayd, Ibn Uyayna, Yahya Qattan, Waki, Abu Usama, and Abu Muawiya. Ibn Khuzayma mentioned this in his Sahih (275).
