Anas bin Malik reported,

Salman fell ill, and Saad came to visit him. Seeing him in tears, Saad asked, "What makes you weep, my brother? Did you not keep company with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Did you not? Did you not?"Salman replied, "I am not weeping for either of two reasons. I am not weeping out of love for this world, nor out of hatred for the next. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a charge, and I see that I have exceeded it."Saad asked, "What charge did he give you?"Salman said, "He charged us that what suffices any one of us should be like the provision of a traveler, and I see that I have exceeded that. As for you, Saad, fear Allah when you judge, when you divide, and when you resolve upon a matter."Thabit said, "It reached me that he left behind only some twenty-odd dirhams from the funds he had."

عن أنس بن مالك قال

اشتكى سلمان فعاده سعد، فرآه يبكي، فقال له سعد: ما يبكيك يا أخي؟ أليس قد صحبت رسول الله ﷺ؟ أليس، أليس؟ قال سلمان: ما أبكي واحدة من اثنتين، ما أبكي حبا للدنيا ولا كراهية للآخرة، ولكن رسول الله ﷺ عهد إلينا عهدا، فما أراني إلا قد تعديت، قال: وما عهد إليك؟ قال: عهد إلي أنه يكفي أحدكم مثل زاد الراكب ولا أراني إلا قد تعديت، وأما أنت يا سعد، فاتق الله عند حكمك إذا حكمت، وعند قسمك إذا أقسمت، وعند همك إذا هممت، قال ثابت: فبلغني أنه ما ترك إلا بضعة وعشرين درهما من نفيقة كانت عنده.
