When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from the expedition of Tabuk, he ordered a herald to announce that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would take the mountain pass, so let no one else take it.While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was being led by Hudhayfa and driven from behind by Ammar, a group of men with their faces covered approached on their mounts and pressed in upon Ammar as he was driving the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ mount. Ammar began striking the faces of their mounts. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Hudhayfa, "Move on, move on," until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended from the pass. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came down, he dismounted, and Ammar returned to him.He asked, "Ammar, did you recognize the people?"Ammar replied, "I recognized most of the mounts, but the men were veiled."He asked, "Do you know what they intended?"Ammar said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He said, "They intended to crowd around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so as to throw him off."Ammar later asked one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "I adjure you by Allah, how many do you know the people of the pass to have been?"The man replied, "Fourteen."Ammar said, "If you were among them, then they were fifteen." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ excused three of them, who said, "By Allah, we did not hear the herald of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor did we know what the people intended."Ammar said, "I bear witness that the remaining twelve are at war with Allah and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses shall stand forth."Abu Walid said, Abu Tufayl mentioned regarding that same expedition that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to the people, and it was reported to him that there was little water at a certain spring. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a herald to announce that no one was to approach the water before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came to it and found a group who had reached it before him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed them on that day.
Ahmad narrated it (23792) from Yazid, who said, Walid, meaning Ibn Abdullah bin Jami, informed us, from Abu Tufayl, who said, and then he mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Walid bin Abdullah bin Jami, for his hadith is hasan.
