The Prophet ﷺ said, "The believer is like a fresh stalk of crop. The wind bends it one moment and straightens it the next. The hypocrite is like the cedar tree, standing firm until it is uprooted all at once."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: مثل المؤمن كالخامة من الزرع، تفيئها الريح مرة، وتعدلها مرة، ومثل المنافق كالأرزة، لا تزال حتى يكون انجعافها مرة واحدة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Illnesses (5643), via Yahya (that is, Qattan), from Sufyan, from Saad bin Ibrahim, from Abdullah bin Kaab, from his father, and he related it.Muslim also narrated it in the Book of the Description of the Resurrection (2810:62) through another route, from Kaab, in similar wording. The wording given here is Bukhari's. In Muslim's version, it reads, "The disbeliever is like the cedar tree." In another narration of his, through yet another route, it reads, "The hypocrite is like the cedar tree."
