It was narrated by Abu Dawud (5116), and this is his wording, and Tirmidhi (3956), both from the hadith of Hisham bin Saad, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, who said, then he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan hadith, and this is more sahih in our view than the first hadith." By this he means what he himself (3955) and Ahmad (8736) narrated, both from the hadith of Hisham bin Saad, in which they did not mention "from his father" between Saeed bin Abu Saeed and Abu Hurairah. Tirmidhi then said, "Saeed Maqburi did hear from Abu Hurairah, but he narrates many things from his father, from Abu Hurairah."I say, its chain is hasan because of Hisham bin Saad Madani, Abu Abbad, for there is disagreement about him, though his hadith is hasan when it does not contain anything objectionable and when there is no disagreement transmitted from him.Ahmad (8792) narrated it from another route in abridged form with his words, "The people will surely abandon their pride in the pre-Islamic tribal sense, or they will become more hateful to Allah than dung beetles." This version contains Abu Mashar, who is Najeeh bin Abdul-Rahman Sindi, and he is daif.His statement "al-ubbiyyah" means arrogance and haughtiness, and its root involves a hamzah, coming from al-ibu, meaning a heavy load. It is said both ubbiyyah and ibbiyyah, with the ayn either with damma or kasrah.His statement "a believer who is God-fearing, or a wicked wretch" means that people are of two kinds, a believer who is God-fearing, who is the excellent and virtuous one even if he has no standing of lineage among his people, and a wicked wretch, who is the base and lowly one even if he is noble and elevated among his family.
