The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah says, 'Might is My lower garment and pride is My upper garment. Whoever contends with Me over them, I shall punish him.'"
قال رسول الله: العز إزاره، والكبرياء رداؤه، فمن ينازعني عذبته.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Righteousness and Kinship Ties (2620), from Ahmad bin Yusuf Azdi, who said, Umar bin Hafs bin Ghiyath told us, my father told us, Amash told us, Abu Ishaq told us, from Abu Muslim Aghar, that he was told it by Abu Saeed Khudri and Abu Hurairah, who said, and then they related it.His words, "Might is My garment and greatness is My cloak, so whoever contends with Me, I will punish him." Nawawi said, "This is how it appears in all the manuscripts. The pronoun in 'His garment' and 'His cloak' refers back to Allah Most High, since He is known from context. There is an omission here, its implied meaning being, 'Allah Most High said, and whoever contends with Me over that, I will punish him.' The meaning of 'contends with Me' is that he takes on that quality for himself, thereby coming to share in its meaning."
