Abu Umayr reported,

Abu Umayr was a close friend of Abdullah bin Masud. Abdullah bin Masud once visited him at his home but did not find him there. He asked permission to enter from his family, greeted them, and requested something to drink. The servant girl was sent to fetch a drink from the neighbors, but she was slow in returning, so the wife cursed her. Abdullah then left. When Abu Umayr came home, he said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, someone like you should not be treated with such reserve. Why did you not greet your brother's family, sit down, and have something to drink?"Abdullah replied, "I did just that. The servant was sent, but she was slow. Either the neighbors had nothing, or they were unwilling to part with what they had, and so the servant was delayed. The wife cursed her, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'A curse goes toward the one to whom it is directed. If it finds a way to reach him or a path into him, it settles upon him. Otherwise, it says, "My Lord, I was sent against so-and-so, but I found no way to reach him and no path into him." It is then told, "Return to where you came from."' I feared that the servant might have a valid excuse, in which case the curse would return, and I would be its cause."
