The Prophet ﷺ said, "Beware of envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours firewood," or he said, "grass."
أن النبي ﷺ قال: إياكم والحسد، فإن الحسد يأكل الحسنات كما تأكل النار الحطب- أو قال: العشب.
Abu Dawud (4903) and Abd bin Humayd (1430) both narrated it through Abu Amir, meaning Abdul-Malik bin Amr, who said, Sulayman bin Bilal narrated to us, from Ibrahim bin Abu Usayd, from his grandfather, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it.As for the grandfather of Ibrahim bin Abu Usayd, Mizzi said in the chapter on unidentified narrators in his Tahdhib, "If his grandfather is not Salim bin Abdullah Barrad, the freed slave of Quraysh, then I do not know who he is. Salim Abu Abdullah Barrad is trustworthy, so accordingly the isnad of the hadith would be hasan, because the hadith of Ibrahim bin Abu Usayd Barrad is hasan. But if his grandfather is not Salim Abu Abdullah Barrad, then its isnad is daif on account of his being unidentified, and perhaps that is why Bukhari said, 'It is not sahih.'" Tarikh al-Kabir (1/272–273).The prohibition of envy has indeed come down in sahih hadiths. Along similar lines is what was narrated from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Envy consumes good deeds just as fire consumes firewood, charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire, prayer is the light of the believer, and fasting is a shield from the Fire."Ibn Majah (4210) narrated it through Isa bin Abu Isa Hannat, from Abu Zinad, from Anas, and he mentioned it. Kitab Adab Aali.Isa bin Abu Isa Hannat Ghifari, Abu Musa Madani, the majority of scholars agree in declaring him daif.
