I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about stray camels that come to my watering troughs, which I have plastered for my own camels. Will I be rewarded if I give them water to drink?He said, "Yes, in every living creature with a thirsty liver there is a reward."
سألت رسول الله ﷺ عن ضالة الإبل تغشى حياضي، قد لطتها لإبلي فهل لى من أجر إن سقيتها؟ قال: نعم، في كل ذات كبد حري أجر.
Ibn Majah (3686) and Ahmad (17581) both narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Zuhri, from Abdul-Rahman bin Malik bin Jashm, from his grandfather Suraqah bin Jashm, who said, and then he mentioned it. It is also found in Ibn Ishaq's biography as recorded in Sirat bin Hisham (1/489-490), at the end of the account of the Hijrah, where Ibn Ishaq explicitly states that he heard it directly from Zuhri. This is evidence for what I maintain, that narrators used to vary the wording they used to describe how they received a narration. Bayhaqi also narrated it in Dalail (2/487) through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Zuhri, from Abdul-Rahman bin Malik bin Jashm, from his grandfather Suraqah bin Jashm, and then he mentioned it.
