The Prophet ﷺ performed ablution, and he was brought a vessel containing water roughly two-thirds of a mudd in measure.
أن النبي ﷺ توضأ، فأتي بإناء فيه ماء قدر ثلثي المد.
Narrated by Abu Dawud (94) and Nasai (74), from Muhammad bin Bashshar, who said, Muhammad bin Jafar told us, Shubah told us, from Habib Ansari, who said, I heard Abbad bin Tamim narrate from his grandmother, who was Umm Umarah bint Kaab, who said, and then he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Nasai said, Shubah said, "What I remember is that he washed his forearms and rubbed them, and wiped the inner parts of his ears, but I do not remember that he wiped their outer parts."A note. None of these hadiths reporting how the Prophet ﷺ performed ghusl from janaba mention this detail, and that is why Imam Baghawi said in Sharh al-Sunnah (13/2), "There is no mention in the hadith of running the hand over the body."I say, that detail regarding the hair of the head is mentioned in connection with the ghusl of a menstruating woman and a person in a state of janaba, in the hadith of Ayesha, which will come shortly, Allah willing.The hadiths on this subject show variation in the Prophet's ﷺ circumstances and conditions regarding the amount of water he used for ghusl and wudu, and there is nothing in them that prevents using more or less water. The only prohibition that has come regarding this is against extravagance.
