The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the companions during the expedition at al-Hijr, "Do not enter upon these people who were punished unless you are weeping. If you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest there befall you what befell them."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال لأصحاب الحجر: لا تدخلوا على هؤلاء القوم المعذبين إلا أن تكونوا باكين، فإن لم تكونوا باكين فلا تدخلوا عليهم، أن يصيبكم مثل ما أصابهم.
Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4702), and Muslim in Zuhd and Raqaiq (2980: 38), both through the route of Abdullah bin Dinar, that he heard Abdullah bin Umar mention it.His saying, "the people of Hijr," refers to the matter of the people of Hijr.
