A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Ayesha, do you know who this is?"She replied, "No, Prophet of Allah."He said, "This is the singing girl of such-and-such tribe. Would you like her to sing for you?"She said, "Yes."So he handed her a tray, and she sang for her. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Satan has blown into her nostrils."
أن امرأة جاءت إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا عائشة أتعرفين هذه؟ قالت: لا يا نبي الله، فقال: هذه قينة بني فلان تحبين أن تغنيك قالت: نعم قال: فأعطاها طبقا فغنتها فقال النبي ﷺ: قد نفخ الشيطان في منخريها.
Ahmad (15720) and Nasai in Kubra (8911) both narrated it from the hadith of Makki bin Ibrahim, who said, "Juayd (that is, Ibn Abdul-Rahman) told us," from Yazid bin Khusayfa, from Saaib bin Yazid, who related it. The wording given is Ahmad's, and its chain of transmission is sahih. Haythami said in Majma (8/130), "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it in Kabir, and the men of Ahmad's narration are the men of the sahih."His saying "qaynah" means a singing slave girl. This hadith shows that singing is permissible on occasion to refresh the soul, provided it contains no acts of disobedience such as obscenity or the like. However, if a woman takes up singing as a habit and profession, Satan blows into her nostrils, and she then sings in ways that are not permissible, as stated in the hadith.
