The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from staying up talking after the evening prayer, rebuking us for it.
قال جدب لنا رسول الله ﷺ السمر بعد العشاء- زجرنا.
Narrated by Ibn Majah (703), Ahmad (3686), Ibn Khuzayma (1340), Ibn Hibban (2031), and Tahawi in Sharh Maani (4/330), all of them through chains from Ata bin Saaib, from Abu Waail, from Abdullah, who related it. Ata bin Saaib is trustworthy, except that he became confused in his later years, and among those who narrated from him before this confusion set in was Hammad bin Salama, in the version reported by Tahawi. He was also followed by others who narrated from him after the confusion had set in, which shows that he did not become confused regarding this particular hadith. Its chain of transmission is sahih. His statement "jadb," with the letter jim, means he criticized and found fault with it. Something of similar meaning has been reported from Anas, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade sleeping before the night prayer and staying up talking after it. This was narrated by Abu Yaala (4039) from Abu Khaythama, who said, Jareer related to us, from Layth, from Anas, who related it.Layth here is Ibn Abu Salim bin Zunaym, who is considered daif by the majority of scholars because he became confused in the latter part of his life, and his hadiths could not be distinguished from one another as a result, which is why he was abandoned as a source. Furthermore, he never actually met Anas, so there is a break in the chain here as well.
