He said, "Someone who heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that he said, 'People will not perish until they leave no excuse for themselves.'"
أخبرني من سمعه من رسول الله ﷺ أنه قال: لن يهلك الناس حتى يعذروا من أنفسهم.
Abu Dawud (4347) and Ahmad (18289) both narrated it through routes from Shuba, from Amr bin Mura, from Abu Bakhtari Tai, who mentioned it. Its chain is sahih.Regarding the phrase "they excuse themselves," it is said, "so-and-so gave excuse from himself" when he provided grounds against himself. It means they are not destroyed until their sins and faults multiply, so they deserve the punishment, and whoever punishes them then has justification. This was stated by the author of Nihaya.
