Abu Bakr stood up, praised Allah and glorified Him, then said, "People, you recite this verse, 'You who believe, take care of your own souls. Those who go astray cannot harm you if you are rightly guided' [Maidah 5:105], but we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'When people see wrongdoing and do not change it, Allah is about to encompass them all with His punishment.'"
Narrated by Abu Dawud (4338), Tirmidhi (2168), Ibn Majah (4005), Nasai in Kubra (11092), and Ahmad (1), and Ibn Hibban declared it sahih (304). All of them narrated it through various routes from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Qays bin Abu Hazim, who mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. On this subject there is also a report from Umaya Shabani, who said, I asked Abu Thalaba Khushani, saying, "O Abu Thalaba, what do you say about this verse, 'Take care of yourselves'?" He said, "By Allah, you have asked someone knowledgeable about it. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, and he said, 'Rather, enjoin one another to good and forbid one another from evil, until you see greed being obeyed, desire being followed, worldly life being preferred, and every person with an opinion admiring his own opinion. At that point, take care of your own self and leave the common people be. For after you come days of patient endurance, in which patience will be like grasping hot coals. The one who acts rightly among them will have the reward of fifty men who do as he does.'" A version from another narrator adds that he said, "O Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty of them?" He said, "The reward of fifty of you."Narrated by Abu Dawud (4341), Tirmidhi (3058), Ibn Majah (4014), and Ibn Hibban (385), all from the hadith of Utba bin Abu Hakeem, who said, Amr bin Jariya Lakhmi told me, Abu Umaya Shabani told me, and mentioned it. In this chain is Amr bin Jariya, whom no one deemed reliable except Ibn Hibban, and for this reason Hafiz said, "acceptable," meaning when corroborated, but I have found no corroborating narration for him. Likewise his teacher Abu Umaya was deemed reliable only by Ibn Hibban.Something of similar meaning was reported from Jareer bin Abdullah, that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no people among whom sins are committed, while they are stronger and more numerous than those who commit them, and they do not change it, except that Allah encompasses them all with punishment." Narrated by Ahmad (19230) through the route of Shuba, and Ibn Majah (4009) and Ahmad (19253) through the route of Israil, and Abu Dawud (4339) and Ibn Hibban (300, 302) through the route of Abu Ahwas Salam bin Salim, all of them from Abu Ishaq, from Ubaydullah bin Jareer, from his father, who mentioned it. Except that Abu Dawud said, "from Ibn Jareer," without naming him. Ubaydullah bin Jareer bin Abdullah Bajali was not deemed reliable by anyone except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him among his reliable narrators, and for this reason Ibn Hajar said, "acceptable," meaning when corroborated, but I have found no corroborating narration for him. However, Sharik named the teacher of Abu Ishaq as "Munzir bin Jareer." This was narrated by Ahmad (19192) through the route of Sharik, from Abu Ishaq, from Munzir bin Jareer, from his father, who mentioned it. This is a mistake, for Sharik was weak in memory, and the correct version is what was narrated by Shuba and Israil and those who followed them.
