The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "None of you should say, 'My soul has become wicked.' Rather, let him say, 'My soul feels uneasy.'"
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: لا يقل أحدكم: خبثت نفسي، وليقل: لقست نفسي.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Manners (6180), and Muslim in the Book of Wording within Manners (2251), both through Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Umama bin Sahl bin Hunayf, from his father, who related it as mentioned.Nawawi said in his commentary on Muslim, "Abu Ubayd and all the scholars of language and rare hadith expressions, and others, said that laqisat and khabuthat carry the same meaning, and the word khubth was disliked only because of the unpleasantness of the term itself. He was teaching them proper manners in speech, to use good expressions and abandon distasteful ones." End of quote.
