Umm Sulaym, the wife of Abu Talha, asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "If a woman sees in her dream what a man sees, must she perform the ritual bath?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes, she must bathe."Ayesha said to her, "Shame on you! Does a woman really experience such a thing?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "May your hands be covered with dust! How else would the child come to resemble her?"
أن أم سليم- وهي امرأة أبي طلحة- قالت لرسول الله ﷺ: المرأة ترى في المنام مثل ما يرى الرجل، أتغتسل؟ فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ: نعم فلتغتسل. فقالت لها عائشة: أن لك، وهل ترى ذلك المرأة؟ فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ: تربت يمينك! ومن أين يكون الشبه؟
This was narrated by Malik in the Book of Purification (84) from Ibn Shihab, from Urwa bin Zubayr, who related it as mentioned. The hadith of Umm Salim was narrated from her by a number of the companions, including Anas bin Malik, Ayesha, and Umm Salama. It was narrated by Bukhari (130, 282, 3328) and Muslim in the Book of Menstruation (310, 311, 312, 313, 314).In some of the narrations found in Muslim, the identity of the questioner is left unspecified, and in it Ayesha said, "May your hands be rubbed with dust, and may you be struck by the spear (meaning the alla, which is the spear)." She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, 'Leave her alone! How else could resemblance occur? When her fluid rises above the man's fluid, the child resembles her maternal relatives, and when the man's fluid rises above hers, the child resembles his paternal relatives.'"In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said to Ayesha, "Rather it is you who should have your right hand rubbed with dust! Yes, so let Umm Salim perform ghusl when she sees that."In another narration, Umm Salama said, "O Messenger of Allah, does a woman have wet dreams?" He said, "May your hands be rubbed with dust! How else could her child resemble her?"In the hadith of Anas found in Muslim, "The man's fluid is thick and white, and the woman's fluid is thin and yellow. Whichever of the two rises above, or comes first, the resemblance comes from it."In Sunan Nasai (200), by the route of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, from Qatada, from Anas, narrated independently as though it were part of his own musnad, its wording is, "The man's fluid is thick and white, and the woman's fluid is thin and yellow, so whichever of the two comes first, the resemblance follows it." This is an abridgment in both the chain and the wording.Imam Ahmad narrated it in three separate musnads. In the Musnad of Anas bin Malik (12222), though there it is from Umm Salim. Then in the Musnad of Umm Salama, from Umm Salim (26503). Then in the Musnad of Umm Salim herself (27114, 27118).Umm Salim is the daughter of Milhan, an Ansari woman of the Khazraj, the mother of Anas bin Malik. She was known by her kunya, and there is disagreement over what her actual name was.
