I was standing beside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a rabbi from among the scholars of the Jews came and said, "Peace be upon you, Muhammad."I shoved him so hard that he nearly fell.He said, "Why did you push me?"I said, "Why don't you say, 'Messenger of Allah'?"The Jew replied, "We only call him by the name his family gave him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "My name is Muhammad, the name my family gave me."The Jew said, "I have come to ask you something."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Will it benefit you if I tell you?"He said, "I will listen with my ears."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ traced lines on the ground with a stick he had with him and said, "Ask."The Jew said, "Where will people be on the Day when the earth is changed into another earth, and the heavens as well?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They will be in darkness, before the Bridge."He asked, "Who will be the first of the people to cross?"He said, "The poor among the emigrants."The Jew asked, "What will be their welcoming gift when they enter Paradise?"He said, "The extra lobe of the fish's liver."He asked, "What will their meal be after that?"He said, "The bull of Paradise will be slaughtered for them, the one that used to graze at its outskirts."He asked, "And what will their drink be afterward?"He said, "From a spring there called Salsabil."He said, "You have spoken the truth."Then he said, "I have come to ask you about something that no one on earth knows except a prophet or one or two men."He said, "Will it benefit you if I tell you?"He said, "I will listen with my ears."He said, "I have come to ask you about the child."He said, "The man's fluid is white and the woman's fluid is yellow. When they meet, if the man's fluid prevails over the woman's, the child will be male by the permission of Allah, and if the woman's fluid prevails over the man's, the child will be female by the permission of Allah."The Jew said, "You have spoken the truth, and you are indeed a prophet."Then he turned and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This man asked me about what he asked, and I had no knowledge of any of it until Allah brought it to me."
Muslim narrated it in the chapter on menstruation (315), from Hasan bin Ali Hulwani, who said, Abu Tuba narrated to us, Muawiya bin Salam narrated to us, from Zayd, that he heard Abu Salam say, Abu Asma Rahbi narrated to me, that Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and then he mentioned it.As for his saying, "What will be their gift," it is with a silent ha, and it refers to what is given to a man as a special gesture of kindness and affection. As for his saying, "The extra piece of the liver of the nun," the nun is the whale, whose plural is ninan. The extra piece of the liver is the tip of the liver, which is the finest part of it. As for his saying, "It became male by Allah's permission, and it became female by Allah's permission," the meaning of the first is that the child was male, and the meaning of the second is that it was female. Nawawi mentioned this in his commentary on Sahih Muslim. The connection of this hadith to the chapter mentioned is what it states regarding the description of the man's fluid and the woman's fluid, the emission of which necessitates ghusl. The hadith is also mentioned in the description of Paradise and Hellfire.
